Virtual Server Extensions
Last Updated: October 10, 2001 As one of our Virtual Server
Administrators, you have access to a large array of programs that extend the
capability and functionality of your server. These programs are are called
"extensions" and though some were developed by third parties, each
are supported by our Support Managers. Each of the extensions is accompanied by
a large amount of documentation which should be reviewed and understood. Some
of the extensions have license agreements that you should make yourself
familiar with and agree to the license.
- CGI Library
- The CGI Library offers solutions for the basic scripting needs of our
customers. The CGI Library includes instructions for setting up scripts such as
imagemaps, guestlists, search engines, counters, and more. The scripts are
absolutely free, include source code, and are fully endorsed by our Support
Managers.
- Java Applet and JavaScript
Library
- The Java Applet and JavaScript Collection is a sampling of some very
functional applets and scripts, each includes easy to follow installation
instructions.
- Contributed Programs and Utilities
- Many third party applications are also supported by the Virtual Server
System. We have compiled installation instructions for a sizeable array of
popular programs including Majordomo, PGP,
WWW Count, just to name a few.
Server Extensions
-
- Cold
Fusion
- Allaire ColdFusion is now available on the Solaris Virtual
Servers.ColdFusion is a popular Web applications development tool. It uses
a tag-based, server scripting language that is ideal for
programming Web applications. Processed entirely on
the server, ColdFusion is commonly used for the
development of database-enabled Web sites. Several
databases are supported, including MySQL.
-
- Active
Server Pages (ASP)
- The Virtual Servers now also support Active Server Pages
(ASP). ASP is a convenient development environment because it allows you to
separate the design of your Web site from the nitty-gritty details of
programming access to databases and applications.
- Apache
1.3.12 Web Server
- Apache 1.3.12 includes many new modules. This modular design for adding web
server features gives web administrators and developers tremendous power and
flexibility. A wide variety of Apache modules have been created supporting all
kinds of exciting web server features. Web server speed and efficiency is
improved when using Apache modules since your Virtual Server web server can
internally process instruction sets rather than relying on external
applications.
- Cron Event
Scheduler
- "Cron", reads a file of dates and commands that you build called
a cron table or "crontab" for short. With your individual crontab,
you can in effect tell the system to `run this command at this time on this
date.'
- Daemon
Auto-Reboot
- There are several Java tools which are currently available on your Virtual
Server. The tools are compatible with version 1.0.2 of the Java spec. The 1.0.2
spec is supported by all Java enabled browsers.
- E-Commerce
Support
- In order to conduct electronic commerce on the Internet you will need
software that provides a secure environment, a shopping cart system, and
transaction processing. We have compiled a list of software that offers our
Virtual Server Administrators options in each of these areas.
- Unix Finger
Service
- The UNIX finger service can be used to provide a form of user directory
service. After you have installed the finger service, remote users will have
the ability to query user profiles on your Virtual Server. User profiles
include information such as full name, login name, home directory, as well as
the contents of the ".plan", ".project", or
".forward" files.
- Autoresponders
- A common capability found on web sites is that of being able to offer
clients automated responses to an e-mail message.
Autoresponders return the
contents of a file as the response to a mail message sent to an address on your
Virtual Server. For example, you may want to set up an autoresponder to answer
all "info@your-domain.name" requests by responding with a Frequently
Asked Question (FAQ) document.
- iManager
- We now have available a web content manager and file browser, iManager,
specifically for use with our Virtual Server System. The iManager utility
provides a familiar form interface (which you access with your favorite
browser) for such tasks as uploading files from your computer to your server,
copying files, deleting files, renaming files, editing files and much more.
- iRoot
- Our web content manager and file browser, iManager, is supplemented by
another authored plugin, iRoot. The iRoot plugin allows you to remotely
administer your virtual server by providing easy form based wizards. The iRoot
wizards walk you through the process of setting up POP accounts, removing POP
accounts, adding and deleting Email aliases, changing passwords, and many
others.
- Microsoft® FrontPage® 2000
- Microsoft® FrontPage® 2000 delivers great web publishing power for
nonporgrammers, is very easy to use, and offers advanced web publishing
features all tightly integrated with Microsoft® Office.
- Mime
Types
- The Virtual Web Service includes an entire web server with a complete set
of configuration files (httpd.conf, mime.types, et al). Your server's
"mime.types" file can easily be edited to allow your Virtual Web
Service to serve content such as Macromedia's Shockwave, etc.
- mSQL
- Mini SQL is a light weight relational database engine that supports a
subset of the ANSI SQL specification. It has been designed to perform the
operations that it supports quickly and with very little resource overhead.
- mySQL
- MySQL is a true multi-user, multi-threaded SQL relational database
management system. It is specifically designed to be a fast, robust, and easy
to use database solution.
- PostGreSQL
- PostgreSQL is a sophisticated Object-Relational database management system,
supporting almost all SQL constructs, including subselects, transactions, and
user-defined types and functions. It is one of the most advanced open-source
database available today.
- Netscape Compatible
Encryption
- You have the option to add Netscape Compatible Encryption to your Virtual
Server. With Netscape compatible encryption, your customers will feel confident
sending you their credit card information online because they know it will be a
secure transaction.
- Virtual
Sub-Hosting
- The Virtual Server System can now be configured to house multiple Virtual
Hosts. This allows you to subdivide your Virtual Server into multiple
partitions, each of which responds to its own individual domain name.
- Real Audio
and VideoReal Server Support
- Because the Virtual Server System operates autonomously in its own
environment (just like a dedicated server), configuring your Virtual Server to
stream RealAudio and
RealVideo is a simple matter. Our installation and configuration
instructions are easy to follow. In fact, you will find it is extremely easy to
add multimedia capability to your web site hosted on the Virtual Server System.
- File Sharing
Support
- The Windows 95®/NT® Drag and Drop feature The Virtual Server System
allows you to map your Virtual Server home directory to your Windows 95® or
NT® desktop over the Internet. This feature, which we call
Windows File Sharing, is a very
convenient and handy interface for maintaining your Web site. After you map
your Virtual Server to a network drive, you simply need to
"drag-and-drop" files to your Virtual Server. This feature also
allows you to delete, copy, and move files on your Virtual Server as if it were
a local drive.
- MIVA
Merchant Support
- By acting as a pre-processor and reading embedded tags and HTML syntax,
Miva can dramatically
reduce development time by providing canned applications without compromising
custom development. Miva is a server based program that preprocesses its own
markup language and outputs standard HTML output which is read by the browser.
- MIVA
(HTMLscript) Support
- By acting as a pre-processor and reading embedded tags and HTML syntax,
Miva can dramatically
reduce development time by providing canned applications without compromising
custom development. Miva is a server based program that preprocesses its own
markup language and outputs standard HTML output which is read by the browser.
- CyberCash
Support
- You have the option to add support for Cybercash's Electronic Payment to
your virtual server.
- Virtual Email
Address Mapping and Anti-Spam Support
- Your Virtual Server System can be configured to provide multiple email
address mappings and block bulk mailings to your clients.
- WebTrends Log
Analyzer
- WebTrends Log Analyzer is the award-winning, fast, powerful, real-time Web
server traffic analyzer created by WebTrends Corporation. WebTrends will
analyze the log files created by your Virtual Server Web server and provide you
with invaluable information about your Web site and the users that access it.
- PHP/FI
Support
- Providing similar functionality to that of miva,
PHP/FI 3or PHP/FI 4 "Personal Home Page/Form
Interpreter," offers a server-side scripting language which enables users
to write simple scripts and include them directly in html files. This speeds up
the overall performance of your web pages since the overhead of forking Perl
several times has been eliminated.
- Shockwave
Flash
- It is easy to include Shockwave Flash multimedia presentations on your web
site. You can use Flash content to add high-impact graphics, animation, and
interactivity to your web site.
- Webalizer
- The Webalizer is a fast, free web server log file analysis program. It
produces highly detailed, easily configurable usage reports in HTML format, for
viewing with a standard web browser.
- Wireless Markup
Language (WML)
- Wireless Markup Language WML is a standard based on the Handheld Device
Markup Language (HDML), which in turn is a subset of HTML. WML works with a
subset of HTML to deliver a limited subset of markup properties with web text,
based on the W3C's guidelines for mobile access. Webmasters have to design WML
templates for the presentation of their data to WML devices.
